Hello, I suffer from stress-related upper gastric IBS. I am 4 stones overweight, carry it on my stomach, 52 yo and male. I am affected by mild anxiety. The stomach symptoms - spasm, bloating and acid reflux - can extend up into my chest, oesophagus, diaphragm and bronchioles and I get a tightness, hyper-sensitivity and breathing distress at times. I suspect weight and aerobic exercise are my true salvation but can you suggest any interim medication incl. any muscle relaxant or antispasmodic for these thoracic symptoms? I had an endoscopy at Xmas with no negative feedback at all. Andy

Hi! Well, if the endoscopy was negative for reflux, then the symptoms may be related to anxiety. The symptoms could also be due to your diet. The food you eat, timing of food, how long you stay empty stomach etc all play a role in this. So keep a food diary and see if a particular food type causes more distress than other and avoid this food. You can take antacids as well. Probiotics, bland diet and certain life style changes may also help. Life style changes that may help include: Drink cold milk at night or take a late night snack. Avoid heavy meals and eat frequent small meals. Avoid too much of caffeine, tea, smoking, fried food and drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic fuzzy ones. Avoid heavy exercises within 4 hours of a heavy meal. Raise the head end of the bed by pillows to 30 degrees. Avoid lying down for least 2 hours after food. The breathing problem could be due to gas. So, if the above measures do not help, then you may need to see a GI specialist and get tests to rule out Crohns, celiac, ulcerative colitis and IBS. Please discuss with your doctor as well. Please feel free to ask anything else you may want to know. Take care!
