Answer by Dr Heinrik M, MD (doctor) on Sat 15, Mar 2008 10:01pm:

Hi, The best advise is to go see a doctor and have yourself examined. This would be the best way to relieve your anxieties. The symptoms of cancer could well overlap with any inflammation due to infection which would be more common than cancer. Among other considerations are anatomical anomalies (within the throat and compression from anomalies outside the throat), stricture due to previous inflammation, throat muscle spasm, nerve disorders. The other signs of cancer such as weight loss may well be explained by feeding less due to the discomfort. The odds of getting cancer for a 34 year old would be pretty small. All cancers put together, 77% of those would be more than 55 years old, 60% more than 65 years old. If we use US data, of the 10,000 cases of cancers in the throat area, about 60% would be in the elderly, so about 40% in the younger group. Assuming that about 4/5 of the total US population (as it was estimated in 1995) would be less than 65 yo, your odds of getting cancer would be about 4000 in 240 million, or about 1 in 60,000. Make an appointment soon.
