Should a slighty low sodium while on an antihypertension med mean I have to stop that medicine?

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 58; USA; hypertension diagnose abouta year ago; Relevant drugs:Mycardis/hct. ) on Thu 07, Aug 2008 01:52pm

I have hypertension and I was taking a med with diuretic in it. This controlled my blood pressure fine. But a recent sodium of 133 prompted my doctor to change me to plain mycardis. Now my systolic pressure is 150 plus and my hands feel tight and my ankles are a bit swollen. My husband (a retired M.D.) thinks that wih sodium of that level all that was needed was to drink less water an ease up on my low salt diet a bit. Is he right?

Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Fri 08, Aug 2008 04:00am:

Hi, How are you? Normal sodium levels are 135-145 meq/l. Level of 133 is only slightly below normal. So yes I think that easing up on the low sodium diet would have helped you. Since now your ankles and fingers are swollen and blood pressure is still not in the normal range you may have to switch back to diuretics. Please discuss this with your treating doctor as soon as possible. Take care!
