Severe recurring hives due to Suprax reaction

Asked by Unregistered (Male; 10; Perfectly healthy; no hospitalizations or surgery; Relevant drugs:Suprax (discontinued); Prednisone and Amoxicillin (currently taking) ) on Mon 23, Feb 2009 05:43pm

My 10 yr old son has been taking Suprax for a bacterial infection. After two days, he had a severe reaction to the medication, and broke out in a serious case of hives. He had the medication switched to Amoxicillin, and it has been six days since he has had any of the Suprax. The bad thing is that he is still breaking out in hives sporadically. They will go away during the night, but they come back whenever he takes a shower or plays hard. Is this normal for the hives to come and go? Should I be concerned? We do not have any health insurance, and the trip to the doctor just about killed us financially last week. Thanks so much for your advice!!!

Hello, Most cases of hives are "idiopathic," meaning no cause is known. Others may be triggered by viral infections or medications. The mainstay of treatment of hives is antihistamine which may be necessary for prolonged periods (in excess of 6 weeks).I would suggest antihistamines like benadryl or Claritin.Application of calamine lotion or mild steroids like dermacort also helps. If the symptoms persist then an evaluation for chronic urticaria has to be done.Pls consult a pediatrician/allergist in that case.Best..
