Answer by Dr Smitha M, MD (doctor) on Sat 06, Sep 2008 09:25pm:

Hi, Stopping atenolol does not increase the heart rate by itself. Rather, it is the atenolol that causes slower heart rate while you are on the drug and the normal rhythm will be restored after you withdraw from the drug. Any change in blood pressure medications will need to be carried out only after discussion with the treating doctor and monitoring of blood pressure at regular intervals. Do keep us posted on any further doubts in this regard.
