Asked by Unregistered on Tue 25, Mar 2008 09:33pm :

MY MOM WAS DIAGNOSED WITH PAPILLARY THYROID CANCER 2 YEARS AGO, SHE HAS HAD 2 TREATMENTS OF I-131, AFTER THEY REMOVED HER THYROID AND PARATHYROIDS, NOW SHE HAS A LUMP IN HER NECK AND THE BACK OF HER NECK THAT HAVE BEEN BIOPSIED AND ARE BOTH THYROID CANCER. ARE THERE ANY OTHER TREATMENTS BESIDES MORE RADIATION? SHE REFUSES TO DO CHEMO. THEY ARE SCHEDULING ANOTHER SURGERY FOR APRIL. ANY ALTERNATIVE MEDICINES SHE COULD TRY? SHE HAS ASLO BEEN ON SYNTHROID FOR 10 YEARS.

Hi, Your mother has papillary thyroid with loco-regional recurrence. In this situation, chemotherapy as well as radiotherapy has limited benefit. She has refused consent for chemotherapy. In any case, doxorubicin has efficacy in only a third of patients. A debulking surgery is a reasonable option. There are a number of new drugs, some of them oral, that are currently undergoing testing. Unfortunately, there is insufficient evidence at present to suggest that your mother try any of them. In a review article titled "Beyond Radioiodine: A Review of Potential New Therapeutic Approaches for Thyroid Cancer", Milena Braga-Basaria and Matthew D. Ringel discuss this issue in depth. The article contains medical jargon, and is available at: http://jcem.endojournals.org/cgi/content/full/88/5/1947
