My girlfriend recently found that she is a carrier of the HPV virus. It is a type that sometimes is linked to cervical cancer, not wart,s but she has no symptoms. We have used oral sex often to bring her to climax and this is our preferred method of doing that. Should I discontinue giving her oral sex out of concern for my health and the risk of throat cancer?

Hello and thank you for posting on the forum. I do understand your concern. HPV virus is transmitted through sexual contact either genital or oral. The same types of HPV which infect the genital areas can infect the mouth and throat. Once a person contracts a specific strain of the HPV virus all you can do is just wait for your body to fight it off. Most of the time HPV virus infections are asymptomatic. In cases when the the infection persists it will cause genital warts .In higher risk strains it may cause changes in the cervix which predispose to cancer. Your girlfriend may discuss about HPV vaccine with her doctor. This vaccine might offer protection against other strains of HPV other than the one she has contracted. Oral HPV may be passed on during oral sex since performing oral sex on a woman is more risky that performing oral sex on a man. This is because the concentration of HPV in the thinner moist skin of the vulva is very high and making it easier to pass the virus on. It is therefore suggested to use condoms and dental dams. It is best to talk to your doctor about any symptoms that could suggest early signs of oropharyngeal cancer. I sincerely hope it helps. Please feel free to write to me again with more queries. Best luck and regards!

Hi! The HPV virus that cause genital warts is different form those that cause cervical or oro-pharyngeal (mouth and throat) cancer. So, yes, oral sex can cause transmission of this HPV virus that causes cancer. The virus types that cause cancer often clear up on their own but, it is always advisable to take precautions. Your girlfriend should have regular PAP smears as advised by her gynecologist. If your partner is less than 26 years of age then she can opt for HPV vaccine. If you both have been sexually active then in all probability you are already a carrier of HPV virus. There is no need to change your sex life but yes, you need to be more careful with both oral and vaginal sex. Use condoms and dental dams as advised by Dr Sharma. Do discuss this with your doctor as well. Take care!
