Hi
Black, tarry stools can be the result of eating certain foods, or consuming iron supplements, or possibly from
internal bleeding. Certain food supplements containing iron, multivitamins containing iron, or substances that
are black or blue in colour can also cause black stools. Foods that can cause black stools include black
licorice, blueburries, and minerals like lead and bismuth.
However, since you are experiencing black stools for few weeks now, it is best in your interest that a proper
investigation is done. As you have been drinking alcohol for a long time, there could be severe gastritis
(inflammation of the stomach) and this can lead to black stools. Also, black stools also indicate that there
may be blood in the stools (which causes them to turn black). This could be due to bleeding somewhere in the
upper gastrointestinal tract or peptic ulcer or in extreme circumstances some cancerous condition too.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease and diverticular disease are also sources of bleeding from the gastrointestinal
tract
Please have a complete set of investigations done at the earliest in consultation with a physician.
Best..
