Is a throat infection catching after 4 days of treatment?

Asked by Unregistered on Thu 01, May 2008 06:06am

Yesterday (Wednesday) my girlfriend found out she had a throat infection (I think she said strep), and started antibiotics. I plan to be with her Saturday. Am I likely to catch it?

Answer by Dr Paul S, MD (doctor) on Thu 01, May 2008 08:50pm:

Good day. If the bacterial throat infection can be treated with antibiotics as early as detected and responds, then the infection would already have been completely resolved and therefore rendered less communicative after 48-72 hours. This does not mean that you can totally avoid catching the infection but the probability will be lower. A possible problem that I can see is that if there is a concomitant viral component, which cannot be treated with antibiotics. These viral infections should also would have healed after 3-4 days but can still remain communicable. I suggest you keep yourself and your immune system healthy by eating a balanced diet, with vitamin and mineral supplementation if necessary. Regards.
