H1N1 & hypertension

Asked by kim memka (Female; 34; Hypertension; Relevant drugs:none ) on Mon 31, Aug 2009 09:58am :

I see conflicting information about H1N1 and hypertention on the web. I do have mild to moderate hypertension but am currently not on any medication. I exercise regularily and only weigh 130 pounds so I am not overweight. Am I at more risk of complications if I contract H1N1? Thanks,

Answer by Dr.Rohit Agarwal (doctor) on Mon 31, Aug 2009 10:10am:

Hello, Complication of long standing hypertension is effect on vital organs like kidney, brain, heart, eyes etc. Now when one have these organs affected, any infection such as H1N1 virus (swine flu) can exacerbate the condition and lead to more severe complication. Infections in general have tendency to bring down the blood pressure. As you mentioned, you exercise daily, it keep your body and mind tone up and enhance your compensatory mechanisms to fight such diseases. Exercise brings down blood pressure. Hope it solve your doubt, if not please revert back. Take care.
