Frequent UTI's - could medications be a contributing factor?

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 41; USA; slight anxiety; Relevant drugs:clonazepam 0.5 mg daily ) on Wed 20, Aug 2008 11:34am

I have been experiencing frequent UTI's. I am prescribed an antibotic, it clears but comes back within a couple of months. I currently take clonazepam, could that be a contributing factor?

Answer by Dr.Bhumika Aggarwal (doctor) on Wed 20, Aug 2008 12:15pm:

Hi, UTI stands for urinary tract infection and is caused by growth of bacteria in the urinary tract. This may be treated with antibiotics. Clonazepam belongs to a class called as benzodiazepine and is prescribed for various disorders. Clonazepam directly may not cause UTI's, however it may cause an increase in the frequency of urination, and therefore may be an indirect cause of frequent infection, especially in case of other associated factors. Hope this helped, let me know if you may need any more information. Best regards
