Enlarged lymph nodes - sign of secondary lymph node cancer?

Asked by Unregistered on Sun 09, Mar 2008 02:30pm

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000 and DCIS in other breast 2001. Mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy. 4 weeks ago I had virus - sore throat etc. I noticed two small painless lumps on either side of neck- not the glands behind my ears that normally swell up with infection. Think they went away - well I didn't notice them for awhile. Last week I had another virus - really bad headache, nausea, diarrhoea, sore throat and flu-like fatique. Enlarged glands are back (or maybe they never went away). I am of course concerned that it's a sign of secondary lymph node cancer. I have an oncology appointment in April. Is it possible to have painless enlarged glands as a result of the throat infection? Thank you

Hi. It is quite possible to have chronically enlarged lymph nodes in the sides of the neck because of any lingering or recurrent infection around the area. It could be a throat infection, but a recurrent ear infection or even dental caries can cause this. Since you have a previous history of breast cancer, any persistently enlarged node, particularly if the node is more than one centimeter in size and firm to hard in consistency, should make us suspect a possible malignancy. If your lymph nodes have the above characteristics, then it might be prudent to have them biopsied sooner.
