Can you give me some information concerning hyperthyroidism or Graves Disease?

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 43; not contributory; Relevant drugs:metropolol, tapezole ) on Thu 17, Jul 2008 07:57am

I was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. My I123 Uptake and scan indicated that I have a goiter. My T3 is 304. My T4 is 14.9. My TSH is .02. I have been waiting about a month to see the endocrinologist. My PCP isn't really telling me much information. He prescribed a beta blocker and tapazole. I have been having heart palpitations, hand tremors, dizziness, eye twitching & dryness, frequent urination, bowel movements more often, exhaustion, numbness and tingling in both hands, decrease in menstrual cycle, night sweats, hair loss, acne cysts, muscle weakness, and HOT flashes. Is it possible for medicine to correct this? Is this condition considered Graves Disesase? Will I have to have my thryroid removed? I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Answer by Dr.Rohit Agarwal (doctor) on Tue 11, Aug 2009 09:33pm:

Dear, You have high T3 and T4 levels. The problem is with thyroid gland it self because TSH is normal. It can be caused by grave disease, hot nodule in the gland, inflammation of gland, This can be controlled by medicine. Grave disease is that, enlarged thyroid (goiters) produce too much thyroid hormone. Only a small percentage of goiters produce too much thyroid hormone; the majority of thyroid goiters actually become large because they are not producing enough thyroid hormone. Some of the symptoms of hyperthyroidism (such as tremor and palpitations) can be improved within a number of hours by medications called beta-blockers (eg, propranolol). Two common drugs are methimazole and propylthiouracil (PTU) which actually interfere with the thyroid gland's ability to make its hormones hence decrease T3 & T4 levels. Radioactive iodine is the most widely-recommended permanent treatment of hyperthyroidism. If above are not successful then surgery is recommended. Take care.
