Hi
I understand that this may be discomforting. White discoloration of the tongue may be due to a candidal
infection or thrush. Prolonged use of antibiotics and other medications (eg medications that suppress the
immune system like corticosteroids) may allow these organisms to flourish. This may present as a white tongue
.Associated symptoms may include burning pain inside the mouth and tongue dryness. Decrease in water intake or
dehydration may also cause white discoloration of the tongue. Drinking hot beverages which may injure the
surface of the tongue may also cause discolorations.
The tongue consists of fingerlike projections called papillae on its surface. Dead cells, food particles and
swelling of these papillae may also cause some discolorations.
As for the large lumps you have noted at the back of your tongue, are these of the same color as your tongue?
These may be enlarged taste buds or papillae (circumvallate type) which are located at the back of the
tongue .
Drink plenty of water and eat well. You may get a tongue cleaner in drugstores which you may use after
brushing your teeth. Cleaning the tongue is part of good oral hygiene and helps prevent bad breath or
halitosis. It also improves taste sensation.
