Boil on the inside lip of my vagina, do I lance or not?

Asked by star69 (Female; 20 ) on Sat 08, Aug 2009 12:05pm

I have a boil on the inside lip of my vagina, it is very painful when I walk and sit, I do shave the area so it is either caused by a hair follicule or a cut whilst shaving. I saw a doc she had a look at it and confirmed it was a boil and said it looks like it'll be ready to burst soon, just take plenty of hot baths and she gave me an antibiotic medicine, would this be to kill the infection so when it bursts it won't be infected pus? I wasn't very happy with the advice the fact that I had never had one before I don't know what to do when it bursts etc. Also I am taking plenty of hot baths as hot as I can stand with 'Dettol' antiseptic in the bath, but the boil is on the inside of my vagina lip the water isnt running over it so i guess the baths aren't helping it along at all. I would like to know do I have to wait for the boil to burst naturally or can I lance it myself, I'd rather know when it is going to happen as I have read they can spread, surely it would be worse if it were to burst when I am out as the pus will be in contact with other areas. I have read about lancing boils and having a bandage ready, how can I bandage this particular boil where it is? Also will the pain stop once it is lanced and will it heal pretty quick? If I were to leave it to burst naturally how long would it take? I know you'd need to see it but generally how long does a boil last? I hope I gave you enough info and I hope you can help I am in pain and am in two minds whether to lance it myself my doctor didn't give me much info about them at all. Thank you in advance.

Dear star69, You have to understand that the boil has only formed at one place and the reason is it is an infection. To prevent spread of infection you are taking prescribed antibiotics so there would be no fear of spread. If it is a small boil (1 or 2 mm) it will decrease by itself and would be self limiting. But a slightly larger with inflamed surface and pus filled and pain it can be relieved faster by doing a small slit with a sterile surgical needle and clearing the puss and also breaking open all the loculi inside the boil with a gloved fingers and it is always good if an expert does that. Apply antibiotics/antiseptic creams at that place and continue taking oral antibiotics. The infection would last for a week if you do not go for a surgical incision of the pus and again if it does not heal with oral antibiotics it will take longer. Take care!
